Moor Insights & Strategy Weekly Update Ending January 11, 2024

By Patrick Moorhead - January 11, 2024

Happy New Year! Moor Insights & Strategy is looking forward to 2024!

This week, I attended CES in Las Vegas.

This month, Melody will virtually attend the Zoom Work Transformation Summit.  Robert will virtually attend AWS Gen AI and Dynatrace Perform in Las Vegas.

Our MI&S team published 18 deliverables:

Over the last two weeks, the press quoted us with 21 citations. They wanted to hear about AI, Apple, Arm, CES, HPE & Juniper, Smartwatches, Micron, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm.

MIS Quick Insights:

A.I./Machine Learning (Paul Smith-Goodson)

  • Deep Mind has created a model called RT-Trajectory that improves the training of robotic arms by adding visual outlines of robot motions to videos. These outlines, called trajectories, help the model learn how to perform tasks from natural language instructions. RT-Trajectory outperforms existing models on unseen tasks and can handle different types of inputs, such as human demonstrations and sketches.
  • RT-Trajectory can learn what is a little creepy by watching human demonstrations of desired tasks, and even accept hand-drawn sketches. That happens to be an important stepping stone for AI to reach self-awareness. Let’s watch this one.
  • I am currently working on a project involving super-intelligent AI, so OpenAI grabbed my attention by announcing it was working on a project to ensure that advanced AI systems remain safe and beneficial to humanity. OpenAI believes AI can reach superhuman intelligence within a decade.
    • So, are humans strong enough intellectually to align superintelligent models? We have no idea at present. Current methods rely on human supervision, but future AI will be capable of extremely complex behaviors beyond human understanding. Humans will be “weak supervisors” relative to superpowerful AI. So, the challenge is to provide a method that weak supervisors can trust and control much stronger models.
    • OpenAI believes the answer is to use smaller AI models to control larger and stronger models.
    • I’ll talk about this later.

Compute/Storage/Cloud (Matt Kimball)

  • Kicking off the new year with a bang, storage, and data management player WEKA received the important NVIDIA DGX BasePOD certification for its Data Platform. Next up? The DGX SuperPOD certification. Like VAST Data, WEKA focuses on high-performance data management with a high-performing storage back end. We have seen WEKA find success in the media space. These certifications will serve WEKA well as AI continues to take center stage in every IT conversation and planning session. Equally important will be the company’s ability to leverage partnerships like the one it enjoys with Lenovo.
  • Is 2024 the year of the GPU cloud? As cloud giants such as AWS and Azure pivot to AI services, I am curious to see how smaller, bespoke cloud providers such as Vultr, Lambda Labs, and CoreWeave further position themselves through differentiation. I speak with enterprise IT executives frequently and hear a lot of cloud fatigue as discussions around current operations and long-term planning unfold. While AI and other high-performing workloads are obvious killer apps to drive adoption, it is critical for these smaller CSPs to find champions within IT organizations to drive enthusiasm and adoption to expand their respective footprints.
  • Has anybody considered the real impact of AWS’s launch of Graviton4? Specifically, its two socket platforms? I anticipate AWS being very aggressive in rolling these (two socket) platforms whenever and wherever possible. Further, I expect AWS will encourage and incentivize customers to evaluate/adopt these platforms wherever possible. I also anticipate Azure following suit with a two-socket platform based on Cobalt. And for Google to join the fray.
    • There is a real impact that such a move can have on the likes of AMD and Intel, as both companies rely heavily on cloud revenue for their respective product lines. And the contributions both EPYC and Xeon have to the profitability of each company are significant.
    • I like that both companies have leaned heavily into the AI wave with IP and products that deliver differentiation. This is smart and enables both to stay ahead of the long-anticipated commoditization of CPU platforms.
  • I was one of the few voices that said the Broadcom acquisition of VMware would NOT follow the same pattern as its other acquisitions (e.g., CA). And it hasn’t in that I don’t believe VMware will stop advancing its innovation in the hybrid cloud market. However, some early moves by the new organization around bundled licensing and partner support left me scratching my head slightly. VMware has a very able and aggressive competitor in Nutanix taking every opportunity to siphon off customers and using a lot of FUD-based messaging and ABT. Broadcom/VMware is giving them plenty of ammunition to do so.
  • HPE announces intent to acquire Juniper. I’m sure my colleague Will has a lot to say about this. As a non-networking guy, I’m trying to separate the hyped messaging (AI innovation, etc..) from the real value of this acquisition. The amount ($14B) means HPE will have to take on a bit of debt to finance the acquisition for a company with a networking portfolio similar to what HPE has in Aruba. I’ll be curious to see how this plays out in the next few quarters.
    • I was half expecting to see HPE target a company like Nutanix to bolster its hybrid cloud capabilities in GreenLake. I wonder if Cisco will look deeper at its Nutanix partnership and perhaps look at ways to strengthen it even more.

ESG (Melody Brue)

Enterprise Data (Robert Kramer)

  • IBM expands its ecosystem with a new Service track to enhance support for its partners. IBM intends to motivate partners to enhance its collaboration with partners. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to facilitate a year of growth for these partners, emphasizing stronger cooperative relationships and mutual development. As partnerships are key aspects of business, I see many global organizations focusing on expanding their ecosystem this year.  https://newsroom.ibm.com/IBM-Expands-Routes-to-Growth-for-Partners

ERP/SCM (Robert Kramer)

  • IBM and SAP are partnering to create a new solution for the CPG and Retail industries. This collaboration is expected to impact various areas, including supply chain, finance, sales, and service, with the help of GAI. IBM’s watsonX will be incorporated into this SAP solution to address direct store delivery processes and product management. This integration will be part of the SAP Direct Distribution product. Now that watsonX AI, data, and governance were introduced in 2023, I expect to see its full impact this coming year.
  • Blue Yonder, a SCM provider, has introduced an interoperable solution focusing on resilience and performance. I like this offering as it shows the value of improving productivity, cost control, and overall supply chain efficiency, especially with 2024 potentially facing supply challenges. These features address challenges that manufacturers, logistics companies, suppliers, and retailers commonly encounter, giving more communication and visibility among these stakeholders by connecting processes data plus incorporating AI and ML in real-time operations.
  • In 2024, supply chains could encounter challenges, highlighting the importance of resilience. With AI and ML capabilities, SCM software can enhance adaptability by providing insights. These challenges include security issues, trade embargoes, labor shortages, ESG considerations, regulations, cost fluctuations, and data access limitations. The influence of digital transformation can integrate advanced technology such as AI, ML, IoT, and robotics into SCM software to mitigate potential disruptions and strengthen supply chain resilience.
  • Supply chain challenges for 2024
    1. Resiliency– in supply chains, it is about adjusting to unexpected changes, a concept known as elastic logistics. It’s crucial to carefully design, implement, and manage the supply chain to ensure it can adapt to market disruptions and demands.
    2. Labor– Labor challenges involve dealing with shortages and having the foresight to manage them effectively. Critical roles such as drivers, warehouse staff, and skilled technicians face a lack of qualified candidates. Additionally, an aging workforce is contributing to the labor issue.
    3. Data– Data management is essential and can help prevent disruptions. Accurate inventory management to balance inventory, control warehousing costs, and meet customer needs, while automated demand forecasting can optimize stock levels and reduce overhead, minimizing the risk of stock shortages.
    4. Supplier issues– Suppliers failing to meet production commitments or going bankrupt can impact the supply chain significantly. Additionally, the imposition of duties on specific products, such as the current antidumping and countervailing duties on aluminum extrusions from fifteen trading partners, can also affect the supply chain.
    5. Shipping Costs– Congestion and delays caused by ocean bottlenecks and canal blockages can disrupt cargo shipments. SCM software can help streamline operations to prevent scheduling conflicts and mitigate these issues.
    6. Sustainability and Compliance– Numerous countries are grappling with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) challenges, leading to stricter regulations that directly affect supply chains. Examples include the US banning the sale of materials mined in Xinjiang province due to forced labor, imposing financial sanctions on Russia, and Norway and Germany addressing human rights violations that impact supply chains. Additionally, climate compliance for emission reduction is a significant concern.
    7. Security– Continuous security measures are necessary to prevent cyberattacks that disrupt supply chains. This involves investing in cybersecurity, staying current with technology, and promoting cybersecurity awareness among employees to protect data and maintain smooth supply chain operations.

Financial Tech (Melody Brue)

  • After years of rejections, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has approved bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), a breakthrough for the cryptocurrency space. The SEC had concerns about market manipulation, but a recent court ruling challenged this stance. Asset managers, including ARK Investments, BlackRock, and Fidelity, have received approval for their ETF applications. The ETFs will be listed on major stock exchanges and track the price of bitcoin, providing investors exposure without the complexities of direct ownership.
  • During the holiday season, online shoppers used the buy now, pay later (BNPL) services to make purchases totaling $16.6 billion, marking a 14% increase from the previous year and reaching a record high, as reported by Adobe Analytics. In the entire 2023 year, consumer spending through BNPL payment platforms amounted to $75 billion, reflecting a 14.3% growth compared to 2022.
  • BNPL sales grew substantially during the holiday season. On Cyber Monday, there was a 42.5% spike in BNPL purchases compared to the previous year, reaching $940 million, making it a record-setting day for BNPL transactions. Throughout November, BNPL transactions increased by 17.5% from 2022, totaling $9.2 billion and making it the highest-performing month on record for BNPL.
  • Data shows fewer downloads of some BNPL provider apps, but transaction volume remains high, likely due to repeat users whose “credit” limits increase over time with responsible use. There are still issues in the space to be worked out with credit building/reporting and regulatory agencies. Still, in general, BNPL has proven to offer general value to both consumers and merchants. The increase in BNPL sales in 2023 underscores a persistent trend of consumers choosing installment payments to finance their holiday shopping.

HCM (Melody Brue)

  • Ceridian has unveiled new Dayforce features tailored for the retail sector ahead of NRF. Machine learning-powered forecasting utilizes ML to refine labor planning with 15-minute increment forecasts. The company’s Shift Marketplace allows employees flexibility in choosing and filling unfilled shifts at various locations, which also helps managers in cost-effective labor allocation. The labor planning feature in Dayforce promotes collaboration between finance and operations, employing scalable data models for comprehensive, long- and short-term planning insights. The Dayforce platform enhances the employee time experience by streamlining workflows, clocking processes, and surfacing critical managerial insights. Ceridian uniquely supports the retail and hospitality industries (currently serving over 1,280 retailers globally), integrating workforce management and global payroll capabilities. The rollout of these features will occur gradually throughout the year for Dayforce customers. We should also start to see the company transition to a unified Dayforce brand later this month. Announced in October, Ceridian will become Dayforce. CEO David Ossip said that by adopting Dayforce as a unified brand, the company provides clarity to organizations grappling with workforce complexities and fortifies the unity among employees and the broader ecosystem. This concerted effort fulfills the commitment to “make work life better.”

Modern Work (Melody Brue)

  • Zoho updated WorkDrive 4.0 to simplify business data management, reducing the need for multiple apps and minimizing context switching in a secure, all-in-one platform for file storage, sharing, collaboration, and workflows. The company introduced APIs for users to connect WorkDrive with other applications to streamline data flow and centralize enterprise content. WorkDrive 4.0’s phase two updates focus on team efficiency for hybrid work. Features such as chunk uploads address challenges with file uploads, including low speeds, network failures, and timeout issues. The new capability allows users to upload large files efficiently, pause and resume uploads, and prevent failures caused by intermittent network availability.
  • Zoho also has collaborated with OpenAI to integrate its AI assistant, Zia. One interesting use case of Zia AI integrated into WorkDrive in a global work setting is how it allows for more effective collaboration among team members in different time zones when commenting on business documents. Real-time suggestions within documents include options to rephrase, shorten, and punctuate comments to provide context clarity and enable remote teams to refine content asynchronously. If this works as described, it could save a lot of back and forth and waiting for people to be back online to clarify something. Users can also ask Zia to recommend content and images with a detailed requirements prompt.
  • Zoho has also added all 22 official Indian languages to its WorkDrive language support as it increases languages and accessibility. The company has updated search and discovery, compliance, Zoho Mail, and WorkDrive integration. These updates come just before Zoho’s annual analyst summit, so I’m guessing the company has much more up its sleeve. Look for a more thorough take from me soon on how Zoho is changing the modern work (and more) landscape.
  • CES product announcements have been rapid-fire this week! HP introduced a new line of purpose-built Chromebooks and PCs, the HP Fortis series, designed to meet the demands of mobile workers and students. The devices aim to address the critical need for durability and reliability as users operate in various environments. The lineup includes the HP Fortis x360 11-inch G5 Chromebook, HP Fortis 11-inch G10 Chromebook, and HP Fortis 14-inch G11 Chromebook. HP also announced an updated version of the HP Pro x360 Fortis 11-inch G11 Notebook PC. These devices offer upleveled productivity, durability through MIL-STD 810 and drop testing, and versatile design with features such as multiple ports and a 360-degree hinge on the HP Fortis x360 model. The focus is on providing uninterrupted productivity with features like Intel® Processor N-series, up to 16GB LPDDR5 RAM, 128GB UFS storage, Wi-Fi® 6E, optional 4G LTE, and up to 11 hours of battery life. The devices are engineered for durability and resistance to spills, key-picking, and dust, making them suitable for various work scenarios.
  • At a CES preview in December, I saw some cool peripherals for hybrid work, including the Poly Voyager Free 20 Wireless Earbuds (with a more approachable price point of $149, available in May 2024, compared to the Voyager Free 60 that I use and love) and the HP 960 Ergonomic Wireless Keyboard. More to come on the importance of ergonomics in a hybrid/remote setting. Also, more to come on announcements from CES in future research notes and episodes of the Hot Desk Podcast.
  • Elon Musk, known for his critical stance on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, sparked a debate on X (formerly Twitter) by equating DEI to racism. Entrepreneur Mark Cuban defended DEI, emphasizing its importance in finding qualified individuals and promoting business success. The conversation has unfolded amid a broader cultural clash over ESG investing and ESG backlash (and greenhushing), with other figures like Lululemon’s founder Chip Wilson expressing controversial views on diversity. (I am purposely leaving Harvard out of this discussion.)The controversy extends to political actions in some states, such as Oklahoma and Texas, taking steps against DEI programs. Cuban argued that DEI contributes to a well-run and successful company, not just a checkbox and a financial burden for CEOs when properly implemented. It will be interesting to see how the backlash against DEI unfolds. According to research from Paradigm, 72% of workers want employers to put resources into building inclusive workplaces. Yet, Bloomberg News reports companies are reducing discussions about DEI on earnings calls. Instead, they opt for terms like “belonging” as an alternative. Companies need to strike a balance in serving a dual purpose with DEI. On one hand, they are driven by principles of social justice, aiming to create fair and inclusive environments by addressing systemic inequalities and promoting diversity. On the other hand, DEI’s strategic aspect is a tool for attracting and retaining top talent. When employees from diverse backgrounds feel supported and valued, companies increase their chances of recruiting high-caliber individuals. Having a workforce and leadership team that mirrors the diversity of the population the companies serve will contribute to better understanding and meeting the needs of a diverse customer base.

Quantum Computing (Paul Smith-Goodson)

  • QuEra Computing has unveiled its roadmap for building scalable quantum computers over the next three years. The company will launch three generations of quantum computers, each with increasing numbers of logical and physical qubits and advanced features such as transversal gates, magic state distillation, and non-Clifford gates. The third generation will be error-corrected using 100 logical qubits and 10,000 physical qubits. It will be interesting to see research results using this compute power and applications in various domains.
