MIS Quick Insights:
A.I./Machine Learning (Paul Smith-Goodson)
- IBM has launched Watsonx Code Assistant, a generative AI-powered assistant that helps enterprise developers and IT operators code faster and better using natural language prompts. The product supports two use cases: IT automation with Watsonx Code Assistant for Red Hat Ansible Lightspeed and mainframe application modernization with Watsonx Code Assistant for Z. The product leverages generative AI based on IBM’s Granite foundation models for code running on IBM’s Watsonx platform. IBM aims to tune Watsonx Code Assistant with more domain-specific generative AI capabilities to assist in code generation, code explanation, and the full software development lifecycle. The product accelerates development while maintaining trust, security, and compliance. IBM Consulting also offers domain expertise and strategies to help clients utilize generative AI and code generation to accelerate modernization.
- Axios reported in an exclusive that President Biden will be signing a broad executive order regulating AI on Monday. The White House, however, has not provided any comments on this matter. Earlier this year, the Biden administration successfully encouraged AI companies to voluntarily commit to safety, security, and transparency, marking progress in the regulation of AI. We cannot afford to stifle AI research with too much regulation. If that happens, China will quickly surpass US capabilities in AI for industrial and military purposes.
- The CEO of IBM said the company welcomes President Biden’s new Executive Order on AI, which aims to ensure the federal government’s responsible use and procurement of AI systems. IBM supports the order’s focus on innovation and research, especially on AI foundation models’ safety and risk management. IBM also advocates for open innovation and a risk-based approach to AI regulation, involving diverse voices and a robust open-source ecosystem. IBM has a long history of introducing powerful technologies while prioritizing safety and security and is committed to helping government agencies adopt AI in trustworthy and beneficial ways for the American people.
- According to China, its Jiuzhang 3 quantum computer has solved a complex problem in a millionth of a second, faster than any classical computer. The problem involved simulating the behavior of light particles in a maze. The machine uses photons to carry qubits, the basic unit of quantum information, and has increased the number of photons from 76 to 255. Quantum computers still need to be ready to replace conventional computers, but they require a protected environment because of high error rates. China is competing with other countries, such as the US and Canada, to achieve quantum supremacy, a point at which a quantum machine can outperform classical computers.

- I participated in 5G Techritory in mid-October in Riga, Latvia. It is clear to me that 5G has also not met expectations in Europe, based on my conversations with enterprises and municipalities. From my perspective, the perception will continue until mobile network operators transition to 5G Standalone globally.
- T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom recently announced an AI competition focused on spurring innovation in network management, customer service, and experience. Given the recent attention paid to generative AI and its potential to improve mobile network resiliency and create richer subscriber experiences, it’s a smart move.
Datacenter:
Networking– (Will Townsend)
- I will be attending Cisco’s Partner Summit in Miami in early November. I expect the company to use the event to announce a set of objectives to better align its channel selling motion to recent efforts to simplify its networking and security portfolios. The latter is critical to the company’s long-term competitiveness.
- I was recently briefed on the Dell Technologies NativeEdge platform, and on the surface, it is compelling despite Hewlett Packard Enterprises’ perceived leadership in the category. Through acquisition and organic roadmap development, Dell has architected a compelling orchestration platform that delivers zero-touch provisioning, zero trust security, and flexibility that has the potential to bridge operational silos and unlock developer innovation cross-domain. I expect the company to lean into generative AI to speed deployment and deliver improved business outcomes for edge computing workloads.

ESG (Melody Brue)
- Siemens held a webinar this week on the power of embedding sustainability into design. The European Commission Proposal for Directive on Eco-design requirements for Energy-Using products estimates that over 80% of all product-related environmental impacts are determined during the product design phase. Siemens is using Siemens NX (formerly “Unigraphics”), an advanced CAD/CAM/CAE, to help design products and manufacturing solutions using the digital twin. Siemens says that by enabling early design optimization with NX sustainability impact analysis, companies can reduce the environmental impact of their products by up to 40 percent. The fascinating process uses the digital world to collect and integrate product requirements, then predict carbon footprint and procure from suppliers based on those predictions before the product makes it into the “real world.”
- At WebexOne, Cisco’s Webex annual user conference, Snorre Kjesbu, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Webex Devices at Cisco, talked a lot about sustainability in the design of Cisco’s collaboration devices. I saw a lot of this when I visited the device team HQ in Oslo, and it is clear that Cisco is building sustainability from “cradle to grave,” as Snorre says. This shows up in the circular design principles with materials used in the devices to products designed to have a longer life, decreasing products’ energy consumption and making packaging more efficient. The company is committed to implementing Circular Design Principles in all products and packaging by 2025. In fiscal 2021, it created an evaluation method to measure progress. By fiscal 2022, 13% of new designs were assessed, with 33% meeting circular design criteria. Leadership now requires product scoring in development, aiming for broader portfolio coverage.
- Kate Krebs, environmental policy adviser for the American Beverage Association, said, “Waste is a design flaw.” It is interesting where that quote comes from, but I wholeheartedly agree and see many others in the industry acting to solve this problem. Design is a less polarizing sustainability topic than some, and I’m happy to see the innovations prioritized.
- Blancco Technology Group, a data erasure and lifecycle solutions provider, reported that its software erased 63.8 million devices in FY 2023, preventing an estimated 107 million kilograms (236 million pounds) of IT devices from entering landfills. The company’s software allows for the reuse, recycling, donation, or sale of end-of-life devices, contributing to a circular economy. Blancco’s “erasing data for good” software helps companies maintain a strong security posture while avoiding the physical destruction of unwanted or end-of-life devices.
Enterprise Data (Robert Kramer)
- Cohesity has chosen Red Hat Enterprise Linux as the primary operating system for its Cohesity Data Cloud platform. This lets Cohesity leverage Red Hat’s technology and support while improving its platform’s customer experience. Transitioning from CentOS Linux 7 to Red Hat Enterprise Linux offers Cohesity a hybrid cloud platform, rapid security vulnerability responses, and consistent Linux experience, providing a smooth migration process.
- Cohesity announces new CEO Advisory Council. The council will advise Cohesity’s CEO and executive team on trends and developing opportunities – with a mission to meet its customer’s long-term needs. The council’s initial focus is understanding Cohesity’s requirements and pinpointing security vulnerabilities across various industries and solutions like ERP, SCM, HCM, and EHR. It will be intriguing to see how the council influences Cohesity’s growth trajectory; stay tuned as I publish an article with additional insights.
- AWS is introducing the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, tailored for public sector clients in the European Union to satisfy data residency and operational mandates. The initiative offers customers greater flexibility and choices to address their data residency and resilience requirements.
- Accenture has purchased MNEMO Mexico to add a stronger presence in Latin America and manage the demand for security services in the region. MNEMO offers advanced cyber defense, a GAI-powered cyber intelligence platform with a security operations center in Mexico City. Many of its existing clients are in the telecommunications, banking, and insurance industries. This aligns with Accenture’s focus on cybersecurity and a vision similar to their recent partnership with Google Public Sector to establish a Cybersecurity Center of Excellence for US federal agencies. In light of this year’s security breaches, many companies are reinforcing their focus on security.
- Infor launched a new Developer Program and Portal to assist developers in building cloud systems. The portal includes an expansive API library, product documentation, educational resources, and tools like Infor Mongoose and Infor OS App Designer. Mongoose allows rapid ERP system modifications, equipping developers with tools to enhance their projects.
- Q3 2023, SAP reported a 16% growth in cloud revenue, reaching €3.47bn, mostly due to its combined SaaS and PaaS portfolio’s growth. While the company had a total revenue increase of 4% at €7.74bn, they barely missed their revenue targets due to less volume in software license revenue. SAP’s revenue for S/4HANA was up, attributed to their campaigns RISE and GROW, with increased revenue of 67% to €914m. SAP looks to have a stronger 4th quarter to help reaffirm its 2023 forecasts.
- In 3Q2023, IBM reported a 4.6% revenue increase to $14.8bn. The growth was primarily driven by software and consulting, with an increase from adopting the watsonx data and AI platform plus IBM’s hybrid cloud solutions. Even with a strong financial stance, IBM generated $1.7B in free cash flow in 3Q23, returning $1.5B to shareholders and increasing investments in R&D and acquisitions, ending the quarter with a cash balance of $11.0B.
- IBM acquired Manta Software Inc., a data lineage platform, to enhance the watsonx suite (ai, watsonx.data, and watsonx.governance) for additional data visibility in AI products. With AI’s growing and more data complexities, businesses are prioritizing to have data quality. An IBM 2023 study showed data lineage as a primary obstacle to AI acceptance. Manta, founded in 2016 in Prague, CZ, can help bring watsonx’s transparency, letting businesses track data origins and usage in AI, which can add to overall compliance and minimize risks. This is an excellent acquisition as it will likely enhance watsonx’s ability to pinpoint the best data for AI processes.
- I attended Cloudera’s Evolve 23 in NYC this week – a customer event introducing new strategies and executives. Cloudera has a modern data architecture with integrated security and governance. The company is restructuring and has a focus with its new executive leaders to be in a growth mode. They discussed the land and expand approach, to first bring in new customers and then cross-sell them to expand its yearly spending. There is a strong importance in providing a full data management strategy to their customers, which includes data quality, data connectivity, data security/governance, and facilitating AI integration. More to come in my upcoming article on Cloudera.
- IBM plans to buy Equine Global to enhance its consulting services in Indonesia. Equine Global has four branches focusing on ERP setups, app development, and data management. They offer strategy and tech services and partner with major companies like SAP, Oracle, AWS, and IBM. This acquisition is IBM’s first in Indonesia, with their vision to expand.
- Snowflake introduced improvements to simplify machine learning model development and app creation in the Data Cloud. They’re also increasing Python functionality via Snowpark for productivity to streamline AI and ML processes, allowing developers to develop and operate apps within Snowflake’s secure infrastructure rapidly. I am working with Snowflake on an upcoming article to detail its 2024 visions.
- Trends in ERP will see more green with sustainable capabilities to strengthen carbon-neutral strategies. ERP vendors are launching modules designed to capture essential information, exemplified by SAP’s introduction of its Green Ledger. h
- IFS invests in ai (ifs.com/ifs-ai) with the goal of innovating the ERP space. They recently published strong YTD FY2023 financial results of a 33% increase in total revenues, reaching €749m. It’s important to remember that while AI plays a significant role in enhancing business processes, a strong data management strategy is crucial for the success of any ERP or SCM solutions. More to come about how data, data management, and ERP connect for your 2024 strategies.
Financial Tech (Melody Brue)
- Apple has expanded the availability of Apple Pay Later to all users in the United States following its initial limited release in March. This feature enables users to split the cost of Apple Pay and use it on the millions of apps and websites that accept Apple Pay purchases into four equal payments over six weeks, with no interest or late fees. Eligible purchases range from $75 to $1,000 on iPhones and iPads. Users can apply for a loan within the Wallet app, select the desired amount, and agree to the terms. Once approved, a “Pay Later” option appears during Apple Pay checkout. Users receive payment overviews and can choose autopay or manual payments, with reminders and access to payment information in the Wallet app.
- Thanks to its substantial cash reserves, Apple is well-equipped to offer this payment option, even when some BNPL providers may struggle to sustain zero-interest loans. While Apple Pay Later may not become a significant revenue stream for the company, its utility undoubtedly solidifies Apple Pay’s position within the Wallet, securing a user base that values the convenience it provides.
IIoT and IoT (Bill Curtis)
- This week, the Connectivity Standards Alliance released Matter 1.2, the second update to the one-year-old home connectivity standard. Backed by some of the biggest names in consumer electronics, including Apple, Amazon, Google, and Samsung, Matter aims to unify the hodgepodge of networks and protocols that impede smart home industry growth. Industry take-up is accelerating, evidenced by over 1,200 product certifications, an additional test facility, and a 24% growth in working group membership. Version 1.2 adds nine new device types. Most notably, refrigerators, dishwashers, laundry equipment, and other white goods appliances now have support, enabling manufacturers to include Matter connectivity as a standard feature that works with HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings, and other ecosystems with a single tap on a smartphone. My advice is to ignore all the hand-wringing comparisons of Matter with entrenched, legacy home automation systems. Matter isn’t “just another Z-Wave or Zigbee,” and it’s not “just another home connectivity standard like all the others.” Matter is already becoming ubiquitous, with support transparently deployed in hundreds of millions of smart speakers, video hubs, and media devices. That’s not an exaggeration – Amazon claims over 100 million Echo devices are now Matter-enabled. Matter will soon be everywhere, in almost every home, integrated into name-brand products from global manufacturers. And that’s how Matter quietly and steadily becomes the dominant smart home connectivity standard.
- Raspberry Pi single-board Arm-based computers have been the de-facto industry standard for Arm-based embedded Linux software experimentation and prototyping for over ten years. With broad support from the open-source community, these inexpensive, single-board platforms (typically $30-$80) enable everyone, regardless of skill level, to write Linux-based applications on a computer about the size of a pack of playing cards. Many commercial IoT products began as prototypes on Raspberry Pi devices. If you visit the desk of any embedded developer, you’ll almost certainly find at least one of those ubiquitous boards nearby. This week, Arm acquired a minority stake in Raspberry Pi, prompting a flurry of analyst comments about Arm’s motivation for investing in the “maker” (experimenter) market. But this quote from Eben Upton, Raspberry Pi’s CEO, reveals the real reason for the investment: “We continue to remove barriers to entry for everyone, from students and enthusiasts to professional developers deploying commercial IoT systems at scale.” Well, there it is. IoT is evolving beyond its “maker” roots into the world of mass-market commercial products, increasingly defined by application software built on standard computing platforms. “Scale” requires standardizing the platform so that system code is essentially the same for every application, and application code does not change as it evolves from concepts to prototypes and products. The Raspberry Pi is a ubiquitous reference platform that converges the software industry on Arm and its partner ecosystem. Some developers grumble that Raspberry Pi is now unlikely to support RISC-V. That’s correct, but the Cambridge-based company has always had a deep partnership with Arm, so it’s not surprising. RISC-V would benefit from a universal development platform similar to the Raspberry Pi. That could be an excellent business opportunity, so critics should stop complaining and get to work.
Modern Work (Melody Brue)
- At WebexOne this week, Cisco announced it has enhanced its Webex AI Assistant for hybrid workers and contact center agents. New features include suggested responses for agents, meeting summaries, and message summaries. Some AI capabilities are available now, and others will roll out by the end of 2023.
- Also, at WebexOne, there was a ton of innovation from the collaboration devices team – from the new Bang & Olufsen Cisco 950 earbuds to complete boardroom solutions and Room Kits. The Room Kit EQX was a big hit at WebexOne. This was partially because the company showed what is under the covers as part of announcing an NVIDIA partnership. The Room Kit EQX is built on the NVIDIA Jetson Edge AI platform. The company calls it an expansion of its inclusive cinematic meetings capabilities. It is Microsoft Teams Rooms certified (the companies are playing very nicely in the sandbox together!) and includes unified hub management and security.
- I have to give a special shout-out to the Bang & Olufsen earbuds. I’m so impressed and feel like I need to do a mini-review. In that, I will get into more of why it’s smart from a brand perspective. But they married a luxury consumer brand to enterprise-grade communication here. These things are of excellent quality. The sound is fantastic, they are super comfortable, and although I’m giving away a little of my “review,” the noise cancellation is so good that I could do a 6 a.m. conference call while blowdrying my hair. More to come on that.
- For the Webex contact center, Cisco has added AI features to help continue its healthy growth in this line of business. The AI features are somewhat to be expected for the contact center, but I like the focus on agent well-being. This shows me that the company understands that employee experience is crucial to customer experience. On a related topic, Cisco Webex has focused the last couple of years on knowledge workers and has started focusing more on frontline workers. It’s less front and center than many of the company’s solutions, but we heard from customers with tens of thousands of frontline workers on Webex (besides what it is doing in the contact center). I’m happy to see the awareness and focus and look forward to seeing where the company goes next with this.
- Vodafone Business and RingCentral have launched ‘One Net Unite con RingCentral,’ a solution designed to offer flexibility and simplicity to business customers in Spain. This solution addresses the needs of hybrid and remote work by providing a reliable and secure platform that enhances communication between employees, customers, and suppliers. It combines RingCentral’s collaboration features with Vodafone’s communications services and is entirely cloud-based, accessible from any device and location. The goal is to boost productivity and offer a differentiated solution for existing and new customers looking to improve collaboration and efficiency.

Quantum Computing (Paul Smith-Goodson)
- Scientists have controlled the spin of single electrons in titanium atoms on a surface by using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to manipulate titanium atoms. The technique is not competitive with traditional methods. It is meant to investigate the quantum properties of various elements or molecules. The researchers placed titanium atoms on a magnesium oxide surface and arranged them in a triangle with the STM. They used microwave signals to make the spin of one electron in a titanium atom interact with the spins of the other two atoms. The researchers believe it can be scaled to 100 qubits. I’ll be following the progress of this technology.
- IonQ announced a breakthrough by creating 29 algorithmic qubits on a barium platform, a new quantum system that uses barium atoms to store and process information. This is a significant milestone in the company’s goal of developing quantum computers that can surpass the capabilities of classical computers, a point known as quantum supremacy. IonQ claims that its barium quantum computer can solve a complex mathematical problem in a millionth of a second. This task would take the world’s fastest supercomputer over 20 billion years. The company also says that barium qubits are more scalable and reliable than the traditional ytterbium qubits that IonQ and other quantum computing companies use. IonQ is competing with other countries and companies to advance quantum computing and offer its systems through the cloud to various customers and partners.
Security (Will Townsend)
- Defense company RTX, formerly Raytheon Technologies, recently announced the sale of its cybersecurity business unit for $1.3B. The deal is likely predicated on an overall sales decline of 20% year over year for the division. From my perspective, the company never extended its portfolio beyond digital security services and secure communications products. New ownership could bring an invigorated focus on extending functionality into new categories with financial upside.
- Technology giant Infosys was recently a target of a cybersecurity breach that resulted in the non-availability of applications and internal systems. The event further reinforces the fact that even technology-savvy enterprises remain vulnerable. I believe bad actors will lean into new technologies like generative AI to mount sophisticated campaigns, and security solution providers will need to do the same quickly to thwart future attacks.
