Carrier/Wireless (Will Townsend)
- T-Mobile recently agreed to buy a significant portion of cable operator Comcast’s 600MHz spectrum. The value is pegged between $1.2B to $3.3B. It could enhance T-Mobile’s efforts to provide widespread 5G coverage in the U.S. This could mark a change in Comcast’s mobile service efforts, with it likely continuing an MVNO relationship through Verizon using CBRS spectrum assets for mobile offload. The latter is something that I wrote about recently in a Forbes contribution, highlighting competitor Charter’s partnership with Nokia.
Datacenter:
Networking– (Will Townsend)
- Cisco recently announced its Secure Application solution to provide business risk insights. The offering is part of the company’s full-stack observability platform. In a recent survey, Cisco claims that 92% of global technologists admit that the rush to innovate through the application development process comes at the expense of robust security. I like how Cisco is leaning into its capabilities to deliver new functionality to its customers.
Compute/Storage/Cloud (Matt Kimball)
- Arm’s IPO arrived, and it came with a bang, going out at a hefty $54.5B (striking at $51/share). I’m not a financial analyst, and I understand some institutional investors’ skepticism about valuation. However, the company’s server IP has a 10% market share in the cloud and is forecasted to grow at a 17% CAGR. And it has an opportunity to establish itself in the explosive AI market, directly and indirectly. First, as we see with Ampere – the Arm architecture has an affinity for inferencing and can demonstrate a real price-performance leadership position over x86. Indirectly, we see NVIDIA designing its Grace CPU on Arm Neoverse V2 to support the Grace-Hopper superchip for GPU-intensive workloads such as ML, GenAI, and deep analytics.
- On the heels of Cisco partnering with Nutanix to deliver a validated HCI solution, the company announced the end of life (EOL) of its own HCI solution, HyperFlex. Though EOL is announced, Cisco will take orders through March 2024 and offer extended support for several years. I’ve seen some criticism of Cisco’s moves and have to say, I don’t understand why. After acquiring HyperFlex a few years back, the company never made a dent in the HCI market as VMware and Nutanix continued to run away as the leaders. As Cisco looks to expand its footprint in the market, both moves are smart. Letting a solution that hasn’t found rhythm in the market continue as an offering does nothing but confuse customers and puts undue pressure on support organizations.
- Big announcement on the Oracle – Microsoft partnership front. Just announced – Oracle database infrastructure (hardware and software) will be co-located in Azure datacenters. This will enable customers to utilize Microsoft tools for their data in Oracle databases more easily, securely, and faster. This is what multicloud is about.

Enterprise Data (Robert Kramer)
- As I’ve been a long-time Salesforce user, it’s exciting to see them unveil their latest offerings. At Dreamforce, Einstein 1 Platform was announced. It is designed to increase productivity and craft trustworthy customer interactions through Data, AI, and CRM. This platform connects AI-driven apps to enhance CRM capabilities with features like analytics, automation, discovery, predictive actions, and integrations with sales and service clouds, among other tools. This marks a pivotal stride for the company. While the advancement is promising, it’s essential to probe into its best practices to ensure optimal utility. Stay tuned for more insights on this development, as I’ll have a near-term article focused on the details of the features influencing data.
- Informatica is expanding its solutions, evidenced by the recent decision of the major shipping firm, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), to partner with them for a modernization initiative. This venture will focus on data integration and cloud migration, aiming to reduce costs for MOL and facilitate their transition to cloud-based data storage. Stay tuned as I will have more updates on Informatica’s emerging services designed to assist businesses in shifting from on-premise to cloud.
- The Rubrik Data Security Summit concluded, centering on unforeseen threats and its implications for businesses. Rubrik is honing in on the next-gen technologies organizations will need to safeguard its data. I had the opportunity to discuss the company’s future vision and strategies in an in-depth conversation with Chief Product Officer Anneka Gupta. More to come in the coming weeks on Rubrik’s strategies to increase awareness and protect its customers.
- Oracle and Microsoft expand their partnership, which should have clear customer benefits. Oracle DB services on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) will move to Microsoft Azure. Through this partnership, customers gain enhanced performance, scalability, and security. It fast-tracks their migrations to the cloud and empowers them to tap into Azure’s advanced infrastructure, tools, and services. Additionally, it’s now possible for customers to integrate Azure and Oracle Database services in a single datacenter setting. This includes support for Oracle Exadata, Autonomous Database, and RAC. Additionally, both companies offer joint support for quick solutions to vital workloads. Oracle Database@Azure will be the new branding for Oracle Database services inside Azure. See my upcoming article detailing this and Oracle CloudWorld next week.
- Next-gen IBM Db2 Warehouse pairs with IBM watsonx.data. As many of you may know, IBM Db2, an analytics data warehouse, is now integrating with the recently announced IBM watsonx.data lakehouse platform. This will enhance your ability for analytics and AI workloads across the enterprise. Stay tuned for my upcoming analysis of watsonx.data.
- SAP partners with IBM for the integration of watsonx. This will be helpful on the enterprise level for both data and AI, specifically for ERP. AI will allow for a better experience to have access to data. This partnership will enable SAP customers to use watsonX.data to improve their data management and analytics capabilities, plus unify their data from SAP ERP, S/4HANA, and SuccessFactors, giving users a single view. I have a long history in the ERP world; thus, my initial thoughts are that this provides another intuitive tool to help with data accuracy and better decision-making.
- Teradata introduces ask.ai, adding GAI to its VantageCloud Lake for better analytics and decision-making. VantageCloud is a cloud platform combining Teradata’s data technology with cloud scalability. It helps businesses create and use data-driven apps and tools. More to come with my future analysis of this development.
Financial Tech (Melody Brue)
- “The SEC’s new ‘T+1’ rule, set to take effect on May 28, 2024, is causing significant changes in financial services institutions (FSIs). The rule shortens the trade settlement cycle for broker-dealer transactions from two days to one, aiming to reduce credit, market, and liquidity risks from unsettled securities trades. The regulatory change presents an opportunity for FSIs to modernize their operations proactively and prepare for future efficiency improvements. At a high level, network observability can be instrumental in identifying security gaps and remediating them quickly and easily. This will not be an overnight switch, and although the rule only takes effect in May 2024, planning for implementing these changes now will lead to better outcomes. The SEC sees the shift to T+1 settlement as a precursor to exploring the possibility of T+0 or instant settlement. It is actively assessing the feasibility of T+0 for the future. More about network observability and security to address upcoming banking regulations for trade settlement cycles in this research note.

Modern Work (Melody Brue)
- Mitel announced the new 700d DECT handset series, which aligns with the continued relevance and popularity of DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) technology. The launch of the DECT handsets shows an enduring demand for the reliable, secure, and flexible communication solutions that DECT provides in sectors like healthcare, hospitality, education, and retail. DECT meets the specific needs of organizations operating in challenging environments, where mobility, clear voice communication, and durability are most important. The solutions provide enhanced communication and meet future regulatory and sustainability requirements, such as the new 2024 EU regulations.
- Adobe announced its support for the White House Voluntary AI Commitments, backing safe and trustworthy AI innovation. With a decade of AI expertise, Adobe fosters creativity while staying accountable and transparent. Adobe has extensive experience in AI, spanning over a decade, which has been instrumental in helping customers maximize creative potential while upholding principles of accountability and transparency. Adobe has implemented comprehensive AI programs encompassing training, testing, and ethical considerations to ensure the responsible development of AI technologies. The company appears committed to security, employing rigorous security measures to protect its AI models and intellectual property. I think with Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative, which champions transparency and authenticity in digital content, the company is leading in trust in AI-generated content. Adobe’s commitment extends to empowering creators, advocating for their rights and control over their work, and collaborating with industry and government.
- Salesforce and Google have expanded their strategic partnership to enhance productivity with AI. The collaboration introduces bidirectional integrations between Salesforce and Google Workspace. The interactions between the platforms are powered by generative AI assistants Salesforce’s Einstein Copilot and Duet AI in Google Workspace to enable users to generate customized content, update records, trigger workflows, and automate processes across both platforms. This partnership is another example of the growing pervasiveness of generative AI in enhancing productivity and customer service for businesses, making work more efficient.

Security (Will Townsend)
- I recently attended the Fortinet Security Summit in Napa Valley. The company has traditionally had a reputation for providing value-oriented security solutions. However, its investment in security fabric, custom silicon, and SASE could position itself for future upside as it competes with Palo Alto Networks, Netskope, and others.
