A.I./Machine Learning (Paul Smith-Goodson)

• A new use case for A.I. is retinal diseases. PixelPlex created a U.I. data set and trained the U.I. to detect various retina diseases and defects based on photographs taken by a fundus camera. The images contained different photos of differing retina damage and illness. From that data, PixelPlex created AIRA, an artificial intelligence retina analyzer that has an 85% accuracy for diagnosis. 
• I recently discussed CodeNet and A.I. with Dr.Puri, IBM Fellow and Chief Scientist of IBM Research. Here are a few interesting things he said CodeNet would able to do: 1.) A.I. can provide recommendations on making non-functioning code functional if it is not working correctly, 2.) A.I. will have the capability to reduce a code's memory footprint, 3.) A.I. can provide recommendations to improve code's performance and run faster 4.) It can search for similar codes across multiple languages 5.) It will be able to translate one code into 55 other languages. CodeNet is very powerful. Just as ImageNet changed the trajectory of A.I. for Computer Vision, CodeNet will likewise for A.I. for Code.
• Eye movement tracking Swedish A.I. company acquired AI-powered Emotion tracking Affectiva for $73 million. SmartEye has 20 years of experience with eye-tracking and automotive interior monitoring. Affectiva also has products for automotive interior monitoring. Combining the two companies makes a lot of sense, and the combination will be a lot stronger.
• IBM also announced CodeNet at Think 2021. CodeNet is the result of 2+ years of work by IBM Research. Much like what ImageNet did for "A.I. for Computer Vision," CodeNet will do for "A.I. for Code." It is a groundbreaking dataset that will drive innovation in A.I. for Code for many years. It is a first-of-its-kind, large-scale open-source data set with 40 million code samples and 700 million lines of code. CodeNet also has over 4,000 problem descriptions and 55 programming languages. In addition to its rich set of languages and problems, 80% of the problems have more than a hundred solutions each. The code samples are annotated with a rich set of information, such as its code size, memory footprint, CPU run time, and status, indicating acceptance or error types. CodeNet is something special.

 Carrier/Wireless (Will Townsend)

• Ericsson introduced a new private networking bundle this week. This "solution in a box" approach builds upon prior kits. I believe it can simplify LTE and 5G private networking deployments for those enterprises that wish to manage the infrastructure on-premises vs. SaaS.
• Athonet may be the best-kept secret in private cellular wireless. Founded over fifteen years ago, the company delivers carrier-grade LTE and now 5G core solutions. I was surprised to learn in a recent briefing that the software-defined networking stack is nearly a decade old and well ahead of its time. A recent win with the Paris Aeroport group to supply a 5G core solution and supplant a well-entrenched incumbent speaks volumes for the company's capabilities.

Datacenter: 

• Storage- (Steve McDowell) 
  • Earnings results for enterprise storage have started coming in for calendar 1Q, and they're indicating that the sector is recovering.  Pure Storage beat estimates with a $412M quarter, up 12% year-over-year. This is significant for Pure, as it shows not just recovery from the COVID-impacted quarters but strong growth relative to the last pre-COVID quarter. Pure's executing very well. 
  • Dell's earnings also beat the street. Its storage business, which has been faltering over the past few quarters, performing worse than the overall market for enterprise storage, seems to be rebounding.  Dell told us that PowerScale and HCI both showed double-digit growth for the company. PowerScale launched at unfortunate timing, just a month into the COVID lock-down, but the market seems to be recognizing what a strong product it is. It's going to be a good year for Dell's storage team.
  • We don't usually think about flash controllers very often, but we would if, like some of the top-tier hyper-scalers, we built our own SSDs.  Marvell is doubling down on this market, launching its Bravera line of SSD controllers targeting exactly this D-I-Y market.  Not only is Bravera the first  PCIe gen5 controller on the market (doubling the performance over PCIe4). It also has features targeting the multi-tenant realities of the public cloud with things like QoS and SLA enforcement in the chip.  This resonates with the hyperscalers, as both Facebook and Microsoft Azure participated in the launch announcement.           
• Networking- (Will Townsend) 
  • This week, Cisco announced several enhancements to its hybrid cloud portfolio, including a new UCS X-Series portfolio, Intersight Cloud Orchestrator and Workload Engine, Service Mesh Manager, and Cloud ACI. The networking giant also extends its customer experience services for the cloud through integrations with recently acquired ThousandEyes and its SD-WAN portfolio. At a high level, I believe these announcements position Cisco to take advantage of incremental monetization opportunities across both its enterprise and service provider install bases.  
  • Aruba is first to the Wi-Fi 6E punch, announcing the industry's first access point this week. I expect Cisco, Juniper, and others will not be far behind. The power of 6GHz lies in its ability to nearly double Wi-Fi's unlicensed spectrum footprint reducing device contention, lowering latency, and improving performance. Device compatibility will take time, but I expect Qualcomm and others will close that gap rapidly.

FinTech (Melody Brue)

• Personal finance Fintech SoFi's had an impressive Wall Street debut on June 1 as its stock jumped 12% as it began trading on the Nasdaq. The company went public via SPAC with Social Capital Hedosophia Corp V, a blank-check company run by venture capital investor Chamath Palihapitiya.
• Meme stocks have been making a second run over the last two weeks, with a wild swing rally reminiscent of the late January Reddit-fueled, trading app-enabled retail investor frenzy. AMC Entertainment Holdings, in particular, has garnered the attention of investors who have banded together to propel the shares. The stock took a slight dip Friday (June 4) after a 97% surge throughout the early part of the week, extending its gains for the year by more than 2,200%. AMC is capitalizing on the stock's blockbuster attention, adding 11.5 available shares and perks like free popcorn for shareholders through its Investor Connect program. Other struggling companies whose stocks have gained popularity by being a part of the meme stock craze should note AMC's marketing moves. 
• Ally Bank has removed overdraft fees. Many banks waived or suspended overdraft fees due to the pandemic, and Ally is now making that permanent. Fintechs are playing a role in putting pressure on legacy banking institutions to eliminate onerous fees. We saw this happen when Schwab, TD Ameritrade, and others ended trading fees once Robinhood and no-fee trading platforms gained traction. While it's a significant moneymaker for banks, overdraft fees cost the bank very little, so they take more risk in charging them and losing a customer than they do eliminating the fees. Consumers continue to have more fee-free options with fintechs, which puts the power in their hands and pressure on the banks. 
  • For Ally, this was somewhat of an easy move as overdraft fees were not a major revenue driver for the bank. However, I think we'll see others follow suit or lose customers to more consumer-friendly fintech options or banks such as Ally.

Home Automation/ Smart Home (Mark Vena) 

• Others will quickly follow suit, but Xiaomi has shown off its latest fast charging tech demo and, consequently, claims the new world records for wired and wireless charging speeds. Using a modified Mi 11 Pro with a 4,000mAh battery, Xiaomi says it's able to fully charge the phone in 8 minutes over a 200W wired "HyperCharge" system, or in 15 minutes with 120W wireless charging. Charging speeds are a frequent battleground for Chinese smartphone companies, who often release demonstrations of breakthroughs that may or may not show up in final products. Two years ago, for example, Xiaomi announced a 100W system that could charge a 4,000mAh battery in 17 minutes, while last year's Mi 10 Ultra filled up in 23 minutes at 120W — though it did have a bigger 4,500mAh battery.
• Need one more reason why one should be skeptical about Google's concerns about privacy? According to media reports, unredacted documents in Arizona's lawsuit against Google show that company executives and engineers were aware that the search giant had made it hard for smartphone users to keep location information private. The documents suggest that Google collected location data even after users had turned off location sharing and made privacy settings difficult for users to find. It was also reported that the documents show Google pressured phone manufacturers into keeping privacy settings hidden because the settings were popular with users.
• Fitbit may soon add snoring and noise detection to its devices, a move that will likely please the spouses and partners of the snoring population and be of interest to people for whom snoring is a sign of a possible health condition. According to media reports, which decompiled the latest version of the Fitbit app in Google's Play Store, the feature allows a Fitbit's microphone (in devices that have one) to listen to "ambient noise including your potential snoring," after you've fallen asleep. Not only would the feature be a major drain on the device's battery, the idea of a sleep tracker monitoring noise "throughout the night," as the release notes state, is a little creepy.
• According to a new media report, Apple's second-generation AirPods Pro will launch next year, following the release of an updated pair of standard AirPods this year. The new AirPods Pro will reportedly feature upgraded motion sensors to allow for fitness tracking. At the same time, the entry-level AirPods will have an updated design similar to the Pro models, along with a shorter stem. A previous report from last year said that the upcoming AirPods Pro could ditch the stem entirely in favor of a more compact design similar to Samsung's Galaxy Buds Plus or Google's Pixel Buds. However, at the time, the media report noted that design challenges meant these plans could change. Its latest report says Apple has "tested" this design, which sounds like it's not guaranteed to appear in the final model.
• In February, Sony revealed it was selling the PlayStation 5 at a loss — but that's imminently about to change. The PS5 should hit break-even in June, and become profitable the very same month, according to a presentation the company shared with investors during its investor day today. That's incredibly fast — happening before the company has even managed to catch up with demand amid a global chip shortage.

IIoT and IoT (Bill Curtis)

• It's been a long time since I've seen so much incorrect and misleading information in the press about any new technology regarding Amazon's rollout of Sidewalk. Sidewalk is a low bandwidth wireless protocol that runs over LoRa (sub-gig) and Bluetooth radios. The protocol connects small devices (door locks, gate openers, pet trackers, whatever) with cloud services via Sidewalk-enabled gateways, including most Echo and Ring products. The device uses any gateway in range regardless of the owner – you, your neighbor, or anyone else. Sidewalk network packets piggyback on the gateway owner's Wi-Fi and broadband connections. Many consumers, reporters, and analysts are rightly concerned about security, privacy, and bandwidth sharing. However, I recommend reading Amazon's security white paper before deciding whether or not to opt out of enabling the service on your Echos and Rings. The device-to-service connection is encrypted and not visible to Amazon or your neighbors. And, bandwidth sharing is not a practical concern for broadband customers because Sidewalk's maximum data rate is a measly 80Kbps – less than 0.1% of a 100Mbps connection. I think Sidewalk's security and privacy risks are far lower than other types of connectivity schemes that we use every day – public Wi-Fi, for instance. So, let's consider the benefits of extending our home device networks beyond the range of Wi-Fi at no cost. I'm not opting out, but I'll be holding Amazon accountable for all security and privacy claims.

Personal Computing/ Collaboration (Anshel Sag)

Quantum Computing (Paul Smith-Goodson)

• Quantum computing is spreading. The latest country to go quantum is Ireland. Tyndall, one of Europe's leading deep tech institutes, with funding from the Irish government, will build Ireland's first quantum computer engineering centers. The center will have about 900 square meters of space and 45 researchers. Tyndall is now recruiting for five new research leaders.
• Congress is working on the "Innovation and Competition Act," which is the U.S. answer to China's accelerating strength in technology. The bill has about $200 billion in it, up from the $150 billion in the "Endless Frontier Act." China is already ahead of the U.S. in quantum communications and claims it has caught up to our quantum computing lead. I don't believe China's superconducting computers or its photonic computers are on a par with ours. Other than qubit counts, I have seen no technical specs on either machine.
• Xanadu, a photonic quantum computer company, announced it had raised $100 million in Series B financing from Bessemer Venture Partners, leading the round with Capricorn, Tiger Global, BDC Capital, In-Q-Tel, along with returning investors Georgian, OMERS, and Tim Draper. Xanadu has raised a total to date of $145 million USD. Xanadu has solid leadership and provides a leading-edge photonic device. Over the last few years, Xanadu has doubled its qubit count and provided cloud access to its photonic quantum computer. It also provides machine learning software.
• The Defense Science Board (DSB) is an independent Department of Defense (DOD) board of scientific advisors. The board has concluded that three quantum technology applications technology holds the most promise for the Department of Defense: 1.) quantum sensing, 2.) quantum computers, and 3.) quantum communications. The DSB concluded that quantum radar, hypothesized to be capable of identifying the performance characteristics (e.g., radar cross-section, speed) of objects—including low observable, or stealth, aircraft—"will not provide upgraded capability to DOD." I will do more research on the report. I have read other reports that China is working on quantum radar technology that will defeat stealth technology.

Security (Will Townsend)

• I spoke with Zscaler this week to assess the company's strength and differentiation in the cybersecurity market. I am impressed with the company's overall cloud-native architecture that has been refined over the past decade to provide massive scalability and security. The platform connects users to applications versus networks, makes applications invisible to potential attackers, and facilitates zero passthrough connections through a unique proxy architecture. In the next several weeks, I expect a significant announcement that should further differentiate the company given its recent announcement to acquire active defense startup Smokescreen.
• Cisco's recent fiscal Q3 earnings revealed the strength and market gains in its security business. I believe the decision to group its various offerings under the SecureX umbrella brand was wise. I think this is making it easy for channel partners to market and sell Cisco security solutions.
