Last week, Paul and I attended Lenovo Tech World, and I presented at IBM’s “Power of 10” event. 

This week, I will be attending Global Foundries Technology Summit (with Anshel), Zoomtopia, the Cisco analyst summit (with Matt), and the Apple event.  Melody will be attending Finovate Fall.  Will plans to attend Open RAN Forum.

A.I./Machine Learning (Paul Smith-Goodson)

• Climate change is very complex from a computational standpoint. It is important to develop next-generation models. For that purpose, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has selected Columbia University as the climate modeling center called Learning the Earth with Artificial Intelligence and Physics (LEAP). Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) will collaborate with the new center to create next-generation data-driven physics-based climate models. The center will create a new discipline merging climate science with data science and AI to achieve its mission. 
• B.) Open AI has created an improved version of OpenAI Codex, an AI system that translates natural language to code. It was released through an API in private beta. Codex powers GitHub Copilot, which Open AI built and launched in partnership with GitHub a month ago. Open AI Codex is proficient in more than a dozen programming languages. It can interpret simple commands in natural language and execute them, making it possible to build a natural language interface to existing applications. Open AI is inviting businesses and developers to build on top of OpenAI Codex through its API. Information is here.

Carrier/Wireless (Will Townsend)

• AT&T and Oneweb announced a partnership intended to extend AT&T's business service coverage within underserved fiber and mobile coverage areas. It represents a big win for Oneweb, one of the first companies to market with low earth orbit (LEO) based Internet services but stumbled financially and required capital infusion through a bankruptcy reorganization. I believe this tie-up will go far in proving the viability of LEO as a backhaul alternative to microwave.

  • Cisco announced its Net Zero initiative to reach net-zero across all scopes of emissions by 2040. It is an audacious goal, but I believe it can immediately demonstrate tangible and measurable progress through its Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) program. CDA focuses on bringing connectivity solutions to underserved regions of the world, and often these areas lack traditional energy grid infrastructure. Subsequently, Cisco has an opportunity to integrate renewable energy platforms such as solar and wind into these deployments as a blueprint.
• Server- (Matt Kimball) 
  • IBM released its 7nm POWER10 chip in its E1080 server.  The POWER10 chip - up to 15 cores, with each core spurring 8 threads. The CPU – and the E1080 server are performance beasts. IBM’s claims with the E1080 seem to focus on performance (of course), power (lower case), and security. And in each one of these areas, IBM demonstrates significant leadership capabilities. What I like about the E1080 (and underlying POWER10 chip) is the focus on acceleration offloads for AI via four math matrix accelerators per core. Some claims show POWER10 delivering a 20x performance increase, though the most recent claims have brought that down to a 5x increase in AI performance. In a market that is screaming toward purpose-built servers and silicon, POWER10 is a very interesting play.  And the E1080 has a chance to capture share in adjacent market spaces. 
  • My two big takeaways from Lenovo Tech World were – the company is “all in” on everything-as-a-service and a deepening of its commitment to the edge. 
    • Everything-as-a-Service – I am a big fan of the way Lenovo positioned TruScale to the market. At the time, it was the easiest message to understand for IT shops that sat below the “large enterprise” category, in my opinion.  I am still a big fan of TruScale messaging and positioning and think opening the company’s portfolio to expand TruScale offerings is wise. I also believe there is a significant opportunity in democratizing advanced workloads through TruScale solutions in specific downstream verticals. The key will be investing in the proper channels and executing a solid sell-through and sell with strategy.
    • Edge – Lenovo made a strong push into “the edge” a couple of years back.  And I like the VMware partnership and the message this sends.  But here’s my struggle about the edge – and this is not related to Lenovo. “The Edge” has morphed over time. For example, Remote Office/Branch Office (ROBO) – is now considered an edge deployment. And ROBO means everything from (literally) a small branch office to the chain of pharmacies and retail outlets with racks running in a closet to support store-specific functions. The point is – the edge is very segmented. Segmented by vertical, segmented by subvertical, and segmented by geo. And each vertical has its ecosystem of specialized hardware, software, and channel players and integrators that service. I believe OEMs and IT solutions providers looking to make a dent in “the edge” start attacking at a more granular level (per vertical/segment/geo) – claim leadership in one of these edge markets, and expand.

Quantum Computing (Paul Smith-Goodson)

• IonQ quantum computing and the University of Maryland announced a $20 million, 3-year “investment” in quantum computing partnership to create the National Quantum Lab at Maryland, or Q-Lab. It will be the nation’s first user facility that enables the scientific community to pursue world-leading research through hands-on access to a commercial-grade quantum computer. The Q-Lab will be located in the UMD Discovery District, next to IonQ’s headquarters in College Park.
• E.ON is a European utility company in Europe that will be working with IBM Quantum to implement quantum solutions for their critical workflow. Energy is rapidly becoming decentralized in the way distribution grids are fed. E.ON wants to determine if quantum computing can optimize the many sources of decentralized energy feeding the infrastructure. It is expected that many smaller companies and households will feed the grid in the future. Additionally, quantum computing could provide more effective charging for the growing number of electric cars. As a partner of IBM Quantum, E.ON will have access to IBM’s quantum computing systems via the IBM Cloud and IBM’s quantum expertise and Qiskit quantum software developer tools. With these IBM Quantum resources, E.On will work with IBM Quantum Technical services team to make this innovation possible.

Security (Will Townsend)

• I have recently spoken to a handful of security startups, including Airgap, Infiot, and Elisity, participating in a category defined as Secure Application Access (SAA). SAA promises to provide robust, cost-effective security by requiring authentication before accessing private applications. I like SAA's flexibility in supporting multi-cloud and eliminating backhaul remote users through a corporate network. The latter is compelling given the nature of work shifting to hybrid post-pandemic.
