Quick Insights:
A.I./Machine Learning (Paul Smith-Goodson)

AR/VR (Anshel Sag)

Carrier/Wireless (Will Townsend)
- I attended an AT&T 5G event this week in New York. I was impressed with demos related to airport connectivity with Boingo, a disruptive AR/ VR learning platform for children with Bookful, and more profound leverage of WarnerMedia content for rich, immersive experiences. New consumer and enterprise applications will define the success of 5G, and I was impressed with what I experienced at the event from a consumer perspective.
Datacenter:
- Storage- (Steve McDowell)
- VAST Data, the enterprising storage start-up that has found great success in several niches where storage with extreme performance can make a business-impacting difference, continues to build out its enterprise-ready features. Its latest update, VAST OS 3.6, brings new cluster-to-cluster async replication features to the fore. VAST is always about speed, offering a snapshot frequency of — and this is not a typo — of up to 15 seconds. That's several orders of magnitude more frequent than more traditional storage vendors, who tend to top-out at about 15 minutes. That'll protect your data. Enterprise features tease enterprise deployments. Keep watching VAST Data.
- DPUs have become all-the-rage, with giants such as NVIDIA staking a huge claim with its Bluefield technology, Xilinx jumping in with its FPGA-accelerated NICs, and even Intel recently announcing efforts around its similar IPU products. It's easy to forget that one of the earliest players, one still delivering some of the most compelling technology, is a company called Fungible. Fungible is stepping up its game as its cofounder and CEO, Pradeep Sindhu, replaces himself with a veteran in this class of market. Eric Hayes, whose lengthy resume includes business-building executive roles at Broadcom and Cavium is taking over as CEO. Sindhu is staying on as head-of-product. It's a smart move, and Hayes will be a capable leader for Fungible.
- NGD Systems has finally found a broad use for its interesting computational storage technology: Chia plotting. Chia is the latest crypto-currency craze and technology that uses the underlying storage as part of the operation. It relies on storage so much that Seagate guided up for the current quarter based on Chia-driven demand. NGD's play, though, is to move the Chia plotting algorithms closer to the storage by using its in-drive compute capabilities. I don't pretend to understand all of the technical details of Chia plotting, but NGD makes it sound good when they talk about it. There's certainly plenty of business to go around in this space.
- Networking- (Will Townsend)
- NetworkWorld recently published its top 10 list of the most influential companies in enterprise networking in 2021. From my perspective, there were no surprises, but the most notable might be NVIDIA. Given its acquisitions of Mellanox and Cumulus Networks, the company is building a full-stack offering that has the potential to be supercharged by its depth in artificial intelligence.
- Server- (Matt Kimball)
- No update
FinTech (Melody Brue)
- No update
IIoT and IoT (Bill Curtis)
- No update
Personal Computing/ Collaboration (Anshel Sag)
- No update
Quantum Computing (Paul Smith-Goodson)
- No update
Security (Will Townsend)
- Microsoft recently announced its intent to acquire RiskIQ. I believe it brings additional depth to the Azure toolset from a visibility and cloud apps security perspective.
