Moor Insights & Strategy, partnered with Futurum Research, held its second annual Six Five Summit last week. The five-day thought leadership event was a huge success thanks to the many sponsors, speakers, and, of course, the attendees. We had over 50 speakers from 30 tech companies with 15 CEOs. We will have stats out next month, but we will easily hit millions of views and tens if not 100s of millions of impressions. In addition, I was thrilled that AWS, Intel, Arm, and NVIDIA all used the event to break news which helped lead to the 69 press citations below. We even had companies try and crash the occasion to announce on top of competitors at the Summit with ensuing Twitter battles. As promised, I will do a better job giving all of you a heads up on the Six Five Summit 2022 milestones! Please provide me with feedback on what you’d like to see next year.

A.I./Machine Learning (Paul Smith-Goodson)

A.I. can improve the efficiency of testing as well as impact health costs in many ways. The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), in association with the Biomaterials Research Center and Asan Medical Center, has developed a urine test that can detect prostate cancer with 100% accuracy. It uses a combination of software and hardware. An A.I. algorithm was trained to understand the correlation between four cancer factors and identify those corresponding to prostate cancer. Using a biosensor and the algorithm, A.I. detected cancer in 76 samples with 100% accuracy. The technique has the potential to reduce the need for surgery as well as unnecessary biopsies.

AR/VR (Anshel Sag)

Facebook's efforts to test advertising in V.R. after years of denying that it would show signs of backfiring and was an obvious source of criticism of Facebook's business model.
We also found out that Facebook has over 10,000 people working on X.R. both in A.R. and VR
Varjo's Reality Cloud is the company's effort to create a real-time environment scanning capability for teleportation in V.R. and real-time collaboration
HTC's Vive Focus 3 is shipping to consumers, and it is by far the most powerful standalone V.R. headset to date.
Adobe's new Substance 3D modeler is an application designed to enable V.R. modeling to professional workflows
Oculus has quietly removed the Go Live to Facebook live streaming capability in the latest Oculus Quest v30 update, which is somewhat problematic for promoting V.R. but is understandable considering all the content strikes it seems to cause for users

Carrier/Wireless (Will Townsend)

Nokia announced a retooling of its AirScale 5G RAN portfolio to address scalability and performance with a transition from FPGA to SoC. Nokia acknowledges that the transition was lengthy and put the company at a disadvantage relative to its incumbent competitors, especially Ericsson. I believe this announcement will help Nokia regain some of its RAN leadership. If executive claims of a 75% reduction in power consumption are valid, that's mind-blowing from a mobile network operator operating expense perspective.
Dell Technologies officially relaunched its push into the telco industry with a virtual event on June 9. The company plans to lean into its open, industry standards DNA to provide core and radio access network solutions in support of disaggregated, 5G network deployments. Many, if not most mobile network operators are well into deployments. Still, some greenfield opportunities exist with Dish in the United States, Rakuten in Japan, and Reliance Jio in India.

Datacenter:

Storage- (Steve McDowell)
- This past week's HPE Discover event was all about Greenlake, HPE's consumption-based as-a-service offering. While there weren't new storage announcements (HPE rolled those out last month, ahead of this month's event), there was plenty of related HCI news. HPE added on-prem Azure Stack HCI and Microsoft SQL Server to Greenlake. HPE also added Nutanix's Era database-as-a-service offering to the Greenlake portfolio. All of this sits next to HPE Simplicity and HPE dHCI in the Greenlake line-up. That's a lot of HCI-related offerings, but the demand is there. The enterprise likes HCI.
- Dell Technologies updated its PowerFlex virtual SAN and HCI solution this week, adding features that directly match the trending we see in enterprise I.T. There is updated support for new NVIDIA and AMD GPUs for graphics-intensive remote desktop, updated container integration capabilities, improved resilience, and support for Dell's Cloud I.Q. management and predictive analytics offering. A solid release, and one that illustrates that there's more in Dell's HCI arsenal than reselling Vmware.
- Delivering capabilities at the edge requires a careful balance of compute, storage, and networking. It's also an environment where packaging is critical, as edge locations can be completely unpredictable. Western Digital is pushing up the stack, delivering new ruggedized edge servers to complement its existing edge storage products. It's a bold move from Western Digital, encroaching into a new competitive environment. But it's also a move that makes a lot of sense.
- Accelerated NICs are officially a trend, as Intel explicitly moves into the space with its announcement of Intel IPUs (Infrastructure Processing Units). Intel IPUs will go head-to-head with NVIDIA's Bluefield DPUs, Xilinx's Alveo smart NIC, along a handful of others. It's an architecture that makes a lot of sense, especially for storage-related applications, where FPGA and GPU acceleration can massage data at line speeds without impacting the CPU. This is becoming a crowded market, but one in which leaders will quickly emerge.
Networking- (Will Townsend)
- At HPE Discover, Aruba extended its Edge Services Portfolio (ESP) with new switching, AIOps, IoT, and security capabilities. In addition, the company claims over 100 million endpoints are managed through Aruba Central, which is a testament to the scalability of its platform.
- Cisco announced its support of the Tokyo Summer Olympics, marked as the first-ever I.P. network-based broadcast that will leverage a cloud-native architecture to ensure scale and performance. An astounding 6,700 pieces of Cisco equipment will support the delivery of over 7,000 hours of video coverage. Cisco's DNA Assurance platform will also be instrumental in ensuring ease of management, improved visibility, and resolution of network and device issues. I believe the broadcast will be an impressive showcase of Cisco's overall capabilities.
Server- (Matt Kimball)
- HPE Discover came and went this week, and the company made several significant announcements. The top of my list are as follows
  - GreenLake Lighthouse – HPE is taking its Ezmeral software platform and creating easily deployed and easily consumed cloud-native environments. On prem, on the edge, or in a co-lo facility. While cloud-native is the future for every enterprise, the move to this architecture can be stymied by the complexities of deploying and maintaining. The very reason why the public cloud has been the first option for many enterprises looking to embrace services-based, containerized environments further. Further, the company's focus on the workloads that span the edge-to-cloud-to-datacenter continuum is smart – this is a focus for organizations across many industries.
  - Security, security, security – HPE doubled down on its security strategy with the announcement of Project Aurora – a platform designed to enable zero-trust architecture to organizations. Again, I like what I see and hear from the company. Project Aurora is a compelling architecture and addresses the challenge organizations face with securing multiple control points across the stack and the organization. But there's more to this than just the Project Aurora announcement and offering – it's the relentless focus the company has on security – putting it on equal footing with performance. And this perhaps is most impressive. Because without this being a "North Star" for the entire organization – from design to development – it can easily become just another feature or capability on a list to be deprioritized when schedule or budget constraints are addressed.
  - Silicon-on-demand - Does anything say cloud model like silicon-on-demand? Again, I like the announcement. An I.T. organization has an application or workload that is especially "bursty" or elastic depending on seasonality or other market conditions – this enables the use of those additional computes resources to be consumed only on an "as-needed" basis, directly out of GreenLake. I have some questions around why this is exclusive with Intel (required upfront investment?) and why Optane is included (i.e., there is no "non-Optane" option). But, in principle, I like this and believe enterprise customers will like it.
- So, it's been about a week since Google Cloud announced its intent to deploy AMD's 3rd Gen EPYC processor to support its Tau environment (virtualized scale-out). Big news caught a bit of interest in the media – especially with the claims made around double-digit performance gains and price-performance leadership. I am curious to get more detail on this, as these claims broaden the aperture to compare against a larger set of cloud providers.
- Did you read about Arm's Confidential Computing Architecture (CCA)? An interesting technology that builds on top of its TrustZone environment. I'm waiting to see how the Neoverse team takes this and what its enablement in V1, N1, and E1 looks like.

FinTech (Melody Brue)

PayPal has increased its rates on some merchant processing. The company said the move reflected the value of its services. For example, consumers are nearly three times as likely to complete a purchase when PayPal products are available at checkout. At the same time, users of the new buy-now-pay-later option spend an average of 15% more. In my opinion, it's a bold move as SMBs are still struggling to emerge from the pandemic.
The market has responded favorably, but I think SMBs could suffer. When you have a high volume of transactions, customers will eliminate anything the offeror perceives as unique, and it will usually come down to price. Although the stock price is high, keeping an eye on churn will be a key indicator of whether this was a smart move. At the rates it is currently offering, merchants can transact with Stripe and Square at a lesser rate. Even with its peer-to-peer payment option, Venmo, it has a formidable competitor in the Cash App, which is currently growing faster in that market.
Wall Street and Venture Capital are converging on digital asset securities. This week Morgan Stanley made its first investment into the blockchain space, co-leading Securitize's $48M series B financing round, demonstrating the growing popularity of digital asset securities among legacy finance stakeholders. Securitize, a registered Broker-Dealer and Transfer Agent hopes to be the future of private markets. Digital securities, while still a nascent market, have caught the attention of Wall Street and V.C.s. With still a way to go until mass adoption, digital securities offer cleaner cap tables and are faster to own, transfer, and trade.
Andreessen Horowitz also launched a new $2.2bn fund for digital assets – its third such fund for digital assets, which shows a vote of confidence in the sector facing regulatory scrutiny. Execs were cited saying they were looking "for the next generation of visionary crypto founders," even as regulators and central banks seek more significant influence over the market. The recent wobbling price of cryptocurrencies and regulatory concerns has tempered digital assets' appetite over the past month. June average weekly asset inflows across all leading digital asset investment providers fell 215 percent. Still, the long-term outlook is promising given these recent institutional investments.

IIoT and IoT (Bill Curtis)

This week, we learned of another widespread IoT supply chain security risk resulting from developer incompetence. This one could affect up to 80 million devices, primarily IP-based security cameras (including a few of mine). This vulnerability is common to multiple OEMs that use Taiwan-based ThroughTek's Kalay platform to connect devices with cloud services for recording and analyzing video, audio, and other data streams. The bug (CVE-2021-32934) is a nasty one – a trifecta of remote exploitation, low attack complexity, and cleartext transmission of sensitive information (i.e., camera video/audio), earning it a 9.1 on the CVSS v3 scale. Anything over 9.0 is "critical," the highest rating. The root of the problem is that Kalay doesn't always protect data transferred between devices and ThroughTek servers. Although the Kalay device SDK provides authkey/DTLS and a secure P2P tunnel, many developer OEMs did not bother to use these security features. So, the handshake between server and client is in-the-clear and very easy to exploit. The incompetence here is astonishing. Developers should never bypass secure communication protocols, and ThroughTek's SDK should not allow insecure connectivity under any circumstances. The only good news is that no threats have been discovered in the wild – yet. But now that the vulnerability is well known, you can expect a wave of exploits because it's so easy to do, there are millions of vulnerable devices, and it'll take a while for OEMs to deploy patches. This problem is similar to the SolarWinds hack in that the root vulnerability is in software components used by many different OEMs. ThroughTek says the bug was fixed months ago. OEMs should immediately update to the latest SDK (3.3.1.0 or 3.4.2.0, enable authkey/DTLS, and push patched firmware ASAP. End users should determine whether or not their cameras (or other devices) are affected. If so, I recommend unplugging them until a patch is available.
Azure Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) – Hybrid cloud is a hot topic getting hotter as the walls between public and private cloud instances come down. All major cloud services now offer highly evolved hybrid cloud services for enterprise deployments because so many applications require low-latency processing close to the devices that generate the data. But there's a big complication on the horizon. For 5g connectivity, this often means installing on-premise computational facilities physically near the communication infrastructure. So, network operators and system integrators need edge computing infrastructure that spans multiple customers rather than deploying customized instances for each customer. Azure MEC simplifies edge compute procurement, deployment, management, and monetization for 5G-based solutions. Enterprises can use a portfolio of Azure services across public clouds, on-premise private clouds, and now multiple-access clouds, opening up new revenue opportunities for telcos, system integrators, and ISVs.
AWS Wavelength MEC – AWS recently announced the general availability of Wavelength on Vodafone 5G/5G networks in the U.K. Wavelength brings AWS services to the edge of carrier networks on telco-provided servers. In addition, customers can extend the Amazon Virtual Private Cloud to include the desired AWS wavelength zones (specific instances of telco storage and compute servers). The company claims this is Europe's first MEC offering.

Personal Computing/ Collaboration (Anshel Sag)

Samsung has debuted new chipsets for its RAN equipment, including new mmWave RFICs, 5G modem SoCs and Digital RFFE ICs designed for Samsung's infrastructure customers.
South Korea says that it is already targeting 2028 for its first 6G networks, which is a little earlier than I would expect the industry to adopt 6G, with 2029 being the earliest. That said, 2020 was supposed to be when 5G launched, and we got it in 2019, so it could be more of the same.
T-Mobile has celebrated hitting 300 million POPs with its 5G low-band network by toasting with its 5Gin and 5Ginger beer and accompanying cocktails

Quantum Computing (Paul Smith-Goodson)

As more money moves into quantum, more people will be enticed by signing bonuses and higher pay to change companies. Constantin Gonciulea, previously part of the JP Morgan Chase quantum team, is now in charge of the advanced technology group at Wells Fargo. Gonciulea will be working across advanced engineering, distributed ledger technologies, and quantum computing in his new job. While JPM Chase, Goldman Sachs, and even BBVA have been active in quantum, I've heard very little about Wells Fargo. Hiring Gonciulea away from JPM Chase may be a signal they are getting serious.
Matthias Troyer, Microsoft distinguished scientist, will be giving the ISC 2021 keynote in two weeks – "Quantum Computing: From Academic Research to Real-world Applications." It seems odd that a man who is coming from a company that wasted more than a decade on chasing non-existing quasi-particles now wants to dispense a dose of "myth-busting" reality on the possibility that quantum computing may not perform useful computations in the next 5-10 years.

Security (Will Townsend)

I spent time with Cisco SecureX SVP and GM Gee Rittenhouse. I am impressed with his vision to simplify the deployment and management of security, a focus on implementing zero-trust beyond the access point, and workload protection in light of I.T. disaggregation and an ever-increasing threat surface. I believe Cisco's approach to security is much more open than its competitors and, in the long run, could serve as a competitive advantage.
I attended Zscaler's Zenith Live virtual event. Many infrastructure providers claim zero trust capability, but I believe Zscaler can deliver zero trust based on three factors. First, Zscaler's Zero Network Access authenticates users to an application rather than provide direct network access to prevent lateral movement. Second, Zscaler's Zero Attack Surface aims to hide source identities and eliminate an attack surface by making applications invisible. Third, Zscaler's Zero Passthrough Connections leverage a proxy architecture that denies robust threat prevention and data protection privileges. In aggregate, I believe that these capabilities deliver unparalleled protection for companies of all sizes.
