I hope you all had a great week!
As we head into the U.S. holiday, Thanksgiving, the Moor Insights & Strategy team has so much to be thankful for, and we appreciate you. We wish you a healthy and happy holiday season as we reach an end to this 2020 year.
We continue to attend conferences virtually. Last week, I attended the Lenovo IAC and the Flex Supplier Summit. Karl attended Supercomputing '20. Steve attended Druva DxP, Palo Alto Networks Ignite'20 ( with Chris), and Red Hat Analyst Day (with Rhett).
We are looking forward to next week attending the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Conference, AWS re:Invent analyst conference, and Salesforce Dreamforce.
Our MI&S team published 25 deliverables last week:
The press quoted us with 18 citations. Journalists wanted to hear about AMD, Apple, Commvault, EdgeQ, Intel, IoT, Marvell, NVIDIA, Qualcomm, and T-Mobile.
Quick Insights:
AR/VR (Anshel Sag)

Carrier/Wireless (Will Townsend)
- The House passed a $750M bill this week to provide grants and subsidies to operators and service providers that embrace Open RAN. It's an impressive feat given the political upheaval in a presidential election year. Open RAN will drive the U.S. domestically sourced 5G supply chain, but it's not without challenges given disaggregation complexity and standards fluidity. The dollars here are a minor relative to the billions being spent by operators to deploy 5G, but it could prime the pump for Open RAN.
Cloud Services (Rhett Dillingham)
- As we near AWS's multi-week virtual version of re Invent, it was surprising to see AWS announce one of its most important new services of the year with the AWS Network Firewall ahead of the usual roster of big announcements at the event. This service is a significant portfolio addition for AWS into a relatively mature functional space competing with software appliance firewall tools available from ISV partners on EC2. It is yet another reminder that the top cloud providers will continue to expand its services footprint into existing ecosystem areas. Thus, addressing customer interests in vendor consolidation of cloud tooling providers and driving growth by increasing its addressable cloud services market footprint.
Datacenter:
- Storage- (Steve McDowell)
- N/A
- Networking- (Will Townsend)
- Start-up Celona attempts to make the deployment & management of cellular private networking infrastructure as simple as Wi-Fi with a SaaS delivery and partnership with HPE Aruba. Access to HPEs massive I.T. distribution channel should also accelerate adoption.
- Server- (Matt Kimball)

Home Automation/ Smart Home (Mark Vena)

IIoT and IoT (Bill Curtis)
- Arm Pelion is now a standalone business. Today, the Arm Pelion division re-launched as an independent company – a wholly-owned subsidiary of Arm. Hima Mukkamala remains at the helm as CEO. This move is not a surprise to anyone following Arm and SoftBank, but now it's "official." The transition should be smooth because Arm's IoT strategy and architecture have been platform-independent from the start over five years ago. There are no overhanging dependencies on Cortex processors or system I.P. Pelion integrates IoT connectivity, device platform software, device management, and edge application management into a unified set of services. The business seems to be scaling nicely, now deployed by over 500 organizations.
- Zigbee's CHIP initiative (Connected Home over I.P.) announced expansion into industrial (commercial) IoT. They follow the same road that Thread took five years ago, focusing first on consumers and then extending into commercial applications. This is a big step towards device interoperability for low power industrial devices, replacing (literally) hundreds of special-purpose protocols with low power versions of the same Internet protocols that we use every day. "I.P. to the edge" devices from different manufacturers and vertical industries can interoperate directly with one another. Its packets can be routed across standard I.P. networks without using ecosystem-specific gateway boxes. The industrial IoT "Tower of Babel" will gradually fade into myth and legend.
Machine Learning/ Artificial Intelligence (Karl Freund)
- It was a big week for A.I. technology announcements aligned to SC20. NVIDIA announced an enhanced A100 Ampere GPU, doubling the on-package memory to 80 G.B. of HBM2E, which also increases bandwidth to 2 TB/S. NVIDIA shared some performance improvements, which benefit large models such as DLRM recommended by as much as 3X. Consequently, NVIDIA has once again leapfrogged the leaders in Data Center A.I., which of course, is NVIDIA.
- AMD introduced its first data center GPU, the MI100. The HPC performance is impressive, and pricing will make it compelling for some HPC installations. The A.I. performance borders on anemic. Think of this as a development on-ramp to the company's expected GPU paired with the exascale El Capitan at the US DOE.
Personal Computing/ Collaboration (Anshel Sag)
- N/A
Quantum Computing (Paul Smith-Goodson)
- More funding flowing into quantum is a good sign - Zapata Computing, a quantum software company, has received $38 million in Series B funding. That brings its total investment to $64+ million. Funding was led by Comcast Ventures, Pitango, and Prelude Ventures, with several additional investors.
- Zapata works with hardware partners that include IBM, Honeywell, and IonQ, plus other enterprise companies. Some of the funding will be used to hire additional researchers and programmers.
- A study headed by NIST was recently released explores how to accelerate quantum technologies' commercialization through a workforce equipped with the necessary skills. The study focused on interviews with 21 U.S. quantum companies. It describes the types of activities being carried out in the quantum industry, profiles the types of jobs that exist, and describes the skills valued across the quantum industry and every job. The current routes into the quantum industry are detailed, providing a picture of higher education's current role in training the quantum workforce. It presents the training and hiring challenges the quantum industry faces and how higher education may optimize the important role it is currently playing. You can read the study here.
