RESEARCH NOTE: Commvault Reshapes Cyber Resilience with Appranix Acquisition

By Robert Kramer - April 24, 2024

Commvault, whose offerings help companies enhance data protection and cyber resilience, has expanded its platform with the recent acquisition of Appranix. Appranix brings patented technology that creates what it calls a “cloud time machine,” enabling a rebuild process to recover any cloud resource.

The Commvault platform, enhanced by its Metallic AI technology, focuses on data protection, security, risk detection, and recovery, with a strong emphasis on overarching cyber resilience. The acquisition of Appranix gives Commvault additional capabilities to improve business continuity and manage cyber threats. Full integration of Appranix’s technology into the Commvault platform is expected to occur this summer.

Appranix Rebuild Technology

In a recent conversation I had with the founder and CEO of Appranix, Govind Rangasamy, he said, “The Appranix platform goes beyond traditional backup and disaster recovery of restoring data. You can now rebuild entire cloud application environments in minutes at any point in time in any region of the cloud from various outages and ransomware attacks.” The platform’s full-service suite includes cloud configuration backup recovery, cyber recovery rebuild, disaster recovery-as-a-service, backup-as-a-service, live clone environments, and cloud environment rebuilds.

The conventional process for rebuilding applications, networks, and service environments after a cyber disaster can take up to three weeks. Appranix’s technology automates the rebuilding of critical cloud applications, the data those applications rely on, and the cloud infrastructure that runs it all. Appranix takes care of dependencies such as networking, DNS configuration, application load balancing, security group access, and much more. This can reduce the time it takes to rebuild from days or weeks to sometimes hours or minutes. Meanwhile, Commvault has existing capabilities in risk detection, readiness for recovery, data recovery, and resilience remediation. Together, the combined companies now cover five critical areas: risk, readiness, recovery, rebuild, and resilience.

Commvault’s goal with this acquisition is to provide enterprises the ability to get up and running even faster after an outage or cyberattack. “We are taking resilience to the next level by marrying Commvault’s extensive risk, readiness, and recovery capabilities with Appranix’s next-generation cloud-native rebuild capabilities,” said Sanjay Mirchandani, president and CEO of Commvault.

Appranix offers several case studies illustrating its platform’s efficacy in improving recovery times and ensuring business continuity. For example, an e-commerce company minimized downtime during outages from hours to minutes using Appranix’s automated resilience features. A financial services firm maintained regulatory compliance while enhancing data protection across multiple clouds. One of the largest event management companies used it to protect their workloads in eight different regions across four continents to increase resiliency for their systems at very large scale. And a technology startup integrated Appranix with its other processes to ensure continuous availability during frequent updates across its complex cloud environment.

Wrapping Up

This acquisition allows Commvault to expand its cyber resilience offerings by integrating its established risk management, readiness, and recovery capabilities with Appranix’s innovative cloud-native rebuild technologies. I expect that merging these technologies will provide more reliable and quicker recovery solutions, which are essential for helping customers maintain continuous business operations.
